Baby Storytime for babies 0-24 months and their moms on Wednesdays from 10:30 – 11:00 am at the Whitehorse Public Library. Free, drop-in. Child Abuse Treatment Services, Family
and Children’s Services (YTG) CATS offers individual and group
counselling for children and youth who have experienced sexual, physical
or emotional abuse, neglect or family violence. Counselling is also
offered to non-offending family members and outreach services are
available in the communities. In addition, CATS provides
consultation and workshops to others working with children. Child Development Centre (CDC) is a
Yukon wide resource specializing in early intervention services for
children from birth to school age, particularly those with special needs.
Services include assessment and follow‑up in the areas of speech and
language, fine and gross motor, cognitive and social and behavioural
activities. Programs include a therapeutic pre‑school, regular
outreach to all rural Yukon communities, education and support for parents
and caregivers, child care settings and a resource library. CDC is
open from mid-August to mid June. Family and Children’s Services Branch (YTG)
provides a wide range of services in the area of investigation,
assessment, support, counselling, treatment and placement for children and
their families. The branch also provides youth justice services. The
services offered by the branch include child welfare services, placement
and support services, family support programs, healthy family program, a
respite care program, child care (day care) services, child abuse
treatment services, youth high risk treatment program, and a residential

worker. Fireweed Family Place offers
information and support to assist parents in raising children from birth
through adolescence. Come to Fireweed Family Place to ask a question, talk
with a Family Educator, visit our resource library, watch a video and/or
find out about other services, including counseling. We have many books
and videos of interest to parents and professionals. For the Sake of the Children 1 is a
free information workshop for separating or divorced parents. The
three-hour workshop will introduce parents to: the separation experience
for children, children’s reactions/children’s needs, parenting plans,
alternatives to court, ongoing parenting and communication, and the
benefits of cooperation. These workshops are offered regularly throughout
the year. For the Sake of the Children II
Communication Workshop is a 6 hour session for people who have
attended the For the Sake of the Children I workshop and focuses on
communication skills that parents can use to support children through the
separation and divorce experience. The workshops are offered regularly
throughout the year. Foster Parents Association is a

franco-yukonnaise, meets the first Tuesday of each month to support
Francophile moms and dads during the time of pre-conception to one year of
age. Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies, Skookum Jim
Friendship Centre, meets every Wednesday to help pregnant women and
new mothers of children up to one year have a healthy baby. Home support
and group sessions are available for all women in the Yukon. Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies, Teen Parent
Centre, a Health Canada funded project, is open to all teen pregnant
women, teen parents and babies up to 12 months of age. With the goal of
having the healthiest pregnancy and baby as possible, HMHB offers
nutritional support and guidance, help with breastfeeding, cooking
sessions, pregnancy information and health guidance on an individual or
group basis. Childcare and transportation assistance is available. Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre,
is a pre-natal nutrition program for all pregnant women, new moms and
their babies up to 6 months of age. Kids in Transition is a six week
session for children, 6-10 years old, whose parents are separating or
divorced. The group will help children by being with other children that
have parents that are separating or divorced, talking about changes in
their family, helping them learn ways to express feelings of sadness and
anger, helping children understand that it is not their fault, and talking
about the words of separation and divorce. La Leche League Canada/Whitehorse
offers support and information for breastfeeding mothers; telephone help,
lending library and monthly meetings. Life After Birth, at Many Rivers
Counselling and Support Services, is a program that offers free and
confidential postpartum support, information and counselling to women and
their families after the birth or adoption of a baby. MIDWIFERY ________________________________________________________ Heather Ashthorn, Almost Home Maternity
Centre, Certified Midwife, CPM, provides holistic care throughout the
childbearing year. Christina Kaiser, Born at Home, Midwifery
Practice, Certified Midwife, provides care, counseling and education
during pregnancy and the childbearing year. Herbs, acupuncture,
aromatherapy, water and lots of patience is offered. Christina
Sim, Borealis Birth Services, Registered Nurse/Birth Doula provides doula support, prenatal classes and
breastfeeding support. Yukon for Funded Midwifery ________________________________________________________ Mothering Your Baby …The First Year
is offered 3 times a year for mothers and their babies up to one year of
age. This is an opportunity to meet other mothers, talk about the ups and
downs of mothering and living and learning with your new baby, enjoy a
nutritious snack and have fun with your baby. There is no charge to
attend. Nobody’s Perfect Parenting provides parents with children birth to age five the opportunity to meet and discuss parenting and child development. Sponsored by Many Rivers Counselling and Support Services, these facilitated weekly sessions typically run for six weeks. Groups are also available in some rural communities. Childcare, snacks and transportation are provided. Contact Joan or Wendy at 667-2970 Parent-Child Mother Goose is a program for parents and their babies and/or young children. Parents learn nursery rhymes, songs and stories while enjoying their children in a relaxed atmosphere. There is no charge to attend. Groups are offered throughout the year at various locations. gathering for parents and their children, offers parents a chance to
discuss a variety of concerns. First Wednesday of each month at the Child
Development Centre (1000 Lewes Blvd.), from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Child care
and supper provided. Partners for Children, a CAPC project
funded by Health Canada, provides training and support to parents, child
care providers and other professionals regarding child development,
managing behaviour, parenting after separation and more. Run ‘N Romp is a drop-in play group for parents, infants and pre-school age children. Activities are held each Tuesday in the United Church from 9:30-11:15 a.m. during September to June. by Health Canada, is available as a resource for Whitehorse and the
communities to design and provide culturally relevant workshops and
facilitator training in traditional parenting. Victim Services & Family Violence Prevention Unit (YTG) offers four distinct programs for the treatment and prevention of family violence. They include Community Victim Services, a Women's Program, the Spousal Abuse Program and the Sexual Offender Risk Management Program

supports, and advocates for, all children and child care providers to
develop an expanded and improved child care system. Yukon Home Educator’s Society (YHES)
provides a support group, social activities, resources and assistance in
developing home-schooling. Yukon Women’s Transition Home Society (Kaushee’s
Place) provides shelter, confidential listening and support for women
and children in abusive situations. A donation room with clothing and
household supplies is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Also offered: a 24-hour crisis line, referral
services and resources on family violence. |
