action based volunteer group who support and advocate for those living in
poverty. Alzheimer/Dementia Family Caregiver
Support Group Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Yukon Brain Injury Survivors support group
for those suffering from a brain injury. Breathe Free, a quit-smoking program sponsored by the 7th Day Adventists and held one to two times a year. For information, contact Chris at 633-2769 C.A.I.R.S., a non-profit
organization, offers programs and workshops, support groups, group and
individual counselling, sewing circles and music jam sessions. All men and
women are welcome to drop-in daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 pm. Canadian Red Cross, Northern BC/Yukon
Region, has a mission to improve the lives of vulnerable people by
mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world. Cancer Relaxation Support Group comes together at the Whitehorse General Hospital. For information, call Yukon Family Services at 667-2970 Chronic Conditions Self-Management
Program offers a 6-week (free) course to teach skills for healthier
living for those with chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia,
heart or lung disease or other chronic illness. Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia
information source is the MEFM Society of BC Co-Dependents Anonymous offers a
12-step process at an open meeting every Wednesday at 7:30 pm at Victoria
Faulkner’s Women’s Centre. Coronary Health Improvement Project
(C.H.I.P.) is a 40-hour course held over four weeks
offering a personal accountability approach to lifestyle change
management. Depression Recovery Program offers
eight sessions to help participants identify and understand depression,
its causes and how to make positive lifestyle choices to cope. Diabetes Education Centre provides support
and resources on a physician referral basis. (Yukon) Diabetes Educators’ Section
(DES) exists as a multidisciplinary organization for diabetes
professionals committed to excellence in diabetes education. Food Bank Society of Whitehorse GAM-ANON provides help for the families of compulsive gamblers. Meetings on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. at Yukon Family Services Association. Call 668-6466 Gay and Lesbian Alliance of Yukon (GALA
Yukon) maintains a social, recreational, educational and political
outlet for the gay and lesbian, bisexual and transgender, multicultural
community. Harm
Reduction Network supports
the development of policies and programs that help people address the
harmful effects of substance use. Hep C Support Group meets at 801
Wheeler Street (Grace Community Church) on Thursdays from 7-9 pm. Hospice Yukon Society provides
support to the terminally ill and their loved ones, as well as bereavement
support to families and individuals coping with a death. Adult and
children’s groups are offered several times a year. The Hospice office
has an extensive library covering all aspects and types of grief including
books, videos, tapes and handouts. Les EssentiElles, a Yukon Francophone
women’s group, focused on improving the quality of life for Francophone
women while addressing their needs, e.g. through education, health,
pre-and post-natal education, work reintegration, workshops on violence
prevention, justice issues and decoding the medias. Lupis Support Group provides support
for lupus and other chronic disease/ illness. Maryhouse offers an Emergency Food
Program daily from 2 pm – 3 pm, sandwiches on Tuesday and Thursdays from
1 pm – 4 pm and a bi-monthly clothing sale. Multiple Sclerosis Support Group meets every second Sunday at 2 pm at Copper Ridge Place. For more information, call Priscilla at 456-2464 Nar-Anon if an addict is affecting
your life. Overeaters Anonymous is a 12-step
program of recovery for compulsive eating. Salvation Army Shelter, Food Bank and
Kitchen opens its doors daily at 10 p.m., providing a warm meal and
ten beds. It remains open until 3:00 pm offering lunch from 11:30 am – 1
pm and coffee/tea throughout the day. The Food Bank is available on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm. Second Opinion Society provides
drug-free alternatives to psychiatry and the mental health system. Also
available: crisis support, drop-in centre, resource library, advocacy,
healing workshops and a supportive community. Serenity Centre is a place for people
to come and chat, enjoy a coffee and experience a place of refuge for a
little get away. Workshops on self-improvement also offered. Society of Yukon Family Day Homes
provides support for family day home operators and raises the awareness of
family day homes. Soup Kitchen, Weekend, provides a
warm meal from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 2:00 to 2:30 p.m.
Sundays at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church Stress Management Workshop,
sponsored by the 7th Day Adventists, is offered once or twice a year
(twice a week for three weeks) to help individuals cope with the stressors
of life. Yukon Palliative Care Program
offers an integrated, multi-disciplinary care team that coordinates the
delivery of end of life care to Yukoners. This “client centered” model
of care supports people in their decisions related to when, where and how
they wish to receive care. (Yukon) Stuttering Self-Help Group
meets monthly both for practice and advocacy. Toastmasters Clubs promote and develop good communication and leadership skills. through experience in a welcome and learning environment.
TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a
support group for individuals interested in weight control. Contact
Madeline Boyd at 668-5977 United Way of Yukon, a place where
organizations can apply for funding for programs addressing the needs of
children, youth and families, people with disabilities, to combat poverty
and drug and alcohol abuse. Yukon Conservation Society Yukon Fish & Game Association
offers programs for all ages to promote the interests of hunters and
anglers in the Yukon. Yukon Status of Women Council is a
non-profit feminist organization providing a voice for Yukon women.
YSWC engages in advocacy, research, education and awareness about issues
affecting the lives of Yukon women. Volunteers are welcome. Yukon Wholistic Health Network
promotes wholistic health in the Yukon through education and advocacy, and
offers a network of support for supporters and practitioners of wholistic
